Embarking on a Voyage of Discovery: Students’ Enthralling Expedition to Hawaii
In a remarkable journey that transcended the traditional confines of classroom walls, a group of intrepid students from Compass High School embarked on an educational odyssey to the heart of the Pacific, Hawaii’s Big Island. This was not just a trip; it was a vibrant tapestry of experiences, woven with threads of knowledge, adventure, and cultural immersion.
A Kaleidoscope of Educational Experiences:
- Volcanic Ventures at Volcano National Park:
- The earth’s power was palpable as students stood amidst the hissing steam pipes, a testament to the island’s fiery heart.
- Venturing into the depths of a dormant volcano tube, they traced the pathways of ancient lava flows.
- The verdant diversity of Hawaii’s flora was revealed as they identified numerous native plant species, a living botanical encyclopedia.
- Carved into the very land were the stories of the past, 200-600-year-old Hawaiian petroglyphs, etching history into stone.

- Cultural Confluence at Lyman Museum and Beyond:
- The Lyman Museum unfolded the rich tapestry of Hawaiian history, language, and culture, a narrative told through artifacts and stories.
- At Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park, students stepped back in time, exploring sacred grounds and ancient traditions.
- Aquatic Adventures in the Pacific Blue:
- Students plunged into the crystal-clear waters, swimming alongside manta rays, spinner dolphins, and green sea turtles in a dance with the ocean’s most graceful inhabitants.
- The touch of black sand between their toes, a unique embrace by the island’s diverse geology.

- Gastronomic Delights and Natural Wonders:
- The island’s bounty was savored, from the crunch of macadamia nuts to the sweetness of papaya and guava, a symphony of flavors.
- The warmth of Kona coffee and the savory notes of Kalua pork completed this feast for the senses.
- Conservation Efforts at Hakalau Forest National Refuge:
- With hands in the earth, students left a legacy of conservation, planting 103 trees to support the symphony of over 55 endangered and at-risk bird species.
Mahalo to everyone who supported the students who went on this Field Studies trip!
