Greetings to our Compass High School Family,
On Wednesday, March 3, 2021, Governor Ducey issued EO-2021-04 (Open for In-Person Learning). Our School, in accordance with the order, has the following information to share with our students, families, and community.
Compass High School will operate in-person, teacher-led instruction by the first Monday following our spring break (in accordance with 2a, 2b, and 2c of the Governors Executive Order). For Compass High School, this reopening date will be:
Monday, April 12th, 2021
Today we are asking all families to fill out the following e-form to inform Compass if you or the student will be participating in in-person instruction on April 12th or if you wish to continue distance learning. Please respond before Friday, March 12th.

Our front office and administration staff will continue to be available to answer any questions concerning your student’s education. CHS will continue to update you by sending important information through our Tyler SIS Parent portal, our website, and directly to your phone number or email currently on file. NOTICE: The conditions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic are continually evolving and the unpredictability of this virus requires CHS to remain flexible and ready to make changes in our plan. CHS’s Safe & Thoughtful Return to School plan and Safety Protocol are consistently evaluated to adapt to the continuing trends of the COVID-19 virus, guided by local, state, and national authorities. CHS Task Force
The Compass High School’s Return to School Task Force development of a Safe & Thoughtful Return to School plan is a collaborative effort guided by CHS’s teachers and administrators, parents and employees, local and state health officials, and Arizona’s Roadmap for Reopening Schools. The work of the Task Force is:
- Focused on safety and on providing families a choice for their student’s education.
- Based on guidance from the Arizona Department of Education Roadmap for Reopening Schools, local public health authorities, Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the input of CHS families and employees.
- In collaboration with parents/guardians and school-based parent organizations, teacher leaders, Education Support Professionals, and employees.
It is Compass High School’s promise that the School’s Safe & Thoughtful Return to School plan is designed with the health and safety of students and employees as the top priority, and based on public health information available at the time. This plan to return to school is student-centered, focused on the social-emotional and physical health and safety of students and staff, and designed to keep students learning at a high level. The 2020-2021 school year will look different, but it’s an opportunity to chart a new course for success when it comes to education. It is CHS’s commitment to offering every student safe, high-quality learning experience with a focus on school connectedness while providing additional services and supports to students and families.

Return To School Plan
Compass High School recognizes that it is in the best interest of students, staff, and families to re-engage, connect, and begin learning as soon as possible, and therefore has begun the school year on Thursday, August 6th, 2020, in a Remote Learning/Distance Learning environment.
On July 23, 2020, the Governor released Arizona: Open for Learning Plan, replacing the August 17 date for in-person instruction with the release of “public health benchmarks” for the safe return of in-person, teacher-led classroom instruction.
The Governors Executive Order states that schools are not required to return to in-person, teacher-led, classroom instruction on a specific date. Rather, the Order states that school districts are to consider the public health benchmark recommendations, guidance from county health officials, community needs, and available resources to determine when in-person instruction can safely be made available for all students.
On August 6th, 2020 those benchmarks were released for the first time. Each benchmark is color-coded to be more easily understood. The benchmarks will be red when there is a substantial risk, yellow when there is moderate risk, and green when there is minimal risk.
These benchmarks were designed to be used in conjunction with 3 phases of learning: Remote, Hybrid, and in-person. The phase of learning we are in will depend on the colors of the benchmarks. For example, the Pima County Health Department will recommend “hybrid learning if ALL criteria on their dashboard are labeled “Progress” or “Criteria Met”.
The current recommendation of the Pima County Health Department is for schools to not resume in-person instruction at this time.
Based on this recommendation Compass High School can only recommend to you that the safest place right now to help slow down the spread of COVID-19 and to help ensure the health and safety of your children is by being at home taking advantage of our remote learning opportunities.
The health and safety of CHS students, employees, and the community remain our focus. CHS is working closely with Pima County health officials and our different stakeholder groups in planning efforts to determine when the school can safely return to in-person instruction.
Remote Learning/Distance Learning will continue until CHS can safely return to in-person classroom instruction. When schools do open for in-person classroom instruction, students may continue in remote learning or choose in-person Classroom Instruction, depending on student/family needs. Because CHS is following the same schedules and using the same curriculum, students can transition from remote learning to classroom instruction without disruption in academics or student learning.
